Newfields BESS Ltd is preparing a planning application for a battery energy storage system (BESS) on land at Newfields Farm, Rownall Road, Wetley Rocks, Staffordshire, ST9 0BS. The application will be made to Staffordshire Moorlands District Council (SMDC).
Our proposed development is located 1.3km north of the village of Werrington and covers approximately 2.5 hectares. The development will occupy an area of approximately 0.6 hectares, with the wider site being used for access and new tree, hedgerow and wildflower planting allowing for biodiversity net gains.
The site currently consists of agricultural fields used for grazing. It is bound to the north and east by the existing 132kV Cellarhead Substation, to the south-east by Newfields Farm buildings, and to the south and west by further agricultural fields.

The proposed battery energy storage system (BESS) will be able to store and release energy from the electricity network. BESS facilities are vital to secure the reliability of the UK’s network as we move to more ‘home-grown’ green energy. Initiatives like solar and windfarms are a great source of carbon neutral electricity however the electricity produced might not be needed when the sun is shining or the wind is blowing, this is where BESS form an essential component of the UK’s energy network.
Newfields BESS will have a storage capacity of up to 99.9 megawatts (MW) | 99.9 megawatt hours (MWh) and provide energy security to the local grid during times of peak demand. More information can be found on the Development page.
As a renewable energy developer, sustainability is one of our core values as an organisation. We strive to create developments with environmental, social, and economic benefits. Our design for the Newfields BESS scheme offers energy security benefits, biodiversity and landscaping enhancements, and local job opportunities. Our technical team includes ecology, landscape and visual, noise, planning, and transport specialists who are working towards a sensitive and sustainable development.
More about our sustainability commitments can be found on the Benefits page.
We look forward to hearing your views on the proposal and answer any queries you may have at this stage. Our contact details are included on the Share your views page.
